A thrilling performance combining exciting music fusion with stunning dances and mind-boggling feats of strength and skill.

Originating from Jaipur, the city of the maharajas, the Jaipur Maharaja Brass Band play a range of traditional instruments, including trumpets, trombones, tubas, clarinets and saxophones. Their music blends Indian melodies, driving brass rhythms and traditional Rajasthani folk music with popular themes from Bollywood, jazz, funk, pop, reggae… and even a touch of Hindustani classical music!

The spectacle is enhanced by their gypsy dancer – famous all over India for her ‘cobra dance’ – and the fire-eating fakir who juggles with knives and walks barefoot on nails and broken glass. The result of this vibrant synthesis of colour, sound and movement never fails to leave audiences the world over breathless and demanding more. A dazzling display not to be missed.

Legendary award winning actress, Miranda Richardson and rising star, Sonya Cassidy head an all-star line up for the Summer Time themed Stories Before Bedtime at London’s Criterion Theatre on 1st June 2012.

An evening of midsummer rituals, misjudged party frocks and sweaty break-ups, Miranda will be reading Virginia Woolf’s short story, ‘The New Dress’, telling the tale of a deeply insecure and painfully self-conscious guest at a party who’s convinced that she is the target of mockery, and Sonya reading a extract from Dodie Smith’s first novel, ‘I Capture the Castle’, following the adventures of an eccentric family struggling to live in genteel poverty in a decaying English castle during the 1930s.

Stories Before Bedtime is a series of late-night readings, designed to champion the love of reading and sees classic stories or extracts that revolve around a central theme, read by some of the country’s leading actors and actresses. It’s designed to transport the audience back to a time when being read aloud before bedtime was a fundamental part of everyday life. It is also a celebration of the book itself, increasingly endangered with the rise of virtual libraries and reading portals.

March’s April Fool themed evening saw Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd read Irvine Welsh’s darkly hilarious short story ‘The Granton Star Cause’ and Andrew Scott, who plays Sherlock Holmes’s nemesis Moriarty in the BBC Drama, read an extract from Martin Amis’ ‘The Rachel Papers’.

Stories Before Bedtime is a three-way partnership between the Criterion Theatre, The Reader Organisation, a pioneer of reader development and social change, and Vintage Classics, which holds the top 20th century classics list in the UK. All Stories for Bedtime ticket holders will also be delighted by a refreshing Hendrick’s Gin cocktail on arrival.

Stories Before Bedtime is part of the Criterion Presents series,a new season of events and shows designed by the Theatre’s new Producer, Sam Hodges, to challenge the traditional preconceptions of West End Theatre.
