RSPB Blacktoft Sands

Nestled between the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Wolds, the reserve is set on the banks of the Humber Estuary and contains one of the largest reedbeds in England.

You are guaranteed an unbeatable all-year-round experience of nature at Blacktoft Sands.  Hear the elusive and haunting bittern against a backdrop of birdsong in spring, and watch marsh harriers  in aerobatic display flights.  In summer, the lagoons are full of migrant waders refuelling on their southward journey from thir Arctic breeding grounds.  Dragonflies hawk along pools and ditches where the secretive water vole makes it home.  Watch swallows, sand martins and swifts whizz over the reeds collecting insects.

Winter brings wonderful waterfowl and breathtaking birds of prey.  On cold days, come down to the reserve reception hide and warm yourself by the roaring stove.

Two short trails take you to six excellent viewing hides overlooking the lagoons and reedbed.
